A winter full of empty threats…or promises

Happy New Year! We hope this email finds you revved up and ready for an amazing 2024. We’re rolling into January with the same enthusiasm as always, and we couldn’t resist dropping you a line to kick off the year.

First things first, did you have a fantastic Christmas and New Year celebration? We hope you indulged in plenty of joy, laughter, and maybe a few too many holiday treats. The team here has been trying to figure out what to do with all the leftover fruitcake in the break room – any takers?

Now, let’s talk about the weather. We couldn’t help but notice that Christmas decided to go incognito this year, opting for a brown disguise instead of the traditional white. Who knew it could be so fashion-forward? While the city snowplows were feeling a bit neglected, we embraced the snow-free streets with open arms. No snow means no icy roads to navigate over the holidays – it was like a winter miracle!

It’s time to warm up!

Now that we’re experiencing -20c weather there are few things better than a nice warm chili on a cold January day. This one is Drew’s favorite, so feel free to drop by a bowl when you have time. 🙂

1 medium yellow onion -diced
1 pound 90% lean ground beef
2 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper* -optional
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1 (15 oz.) can petite diced tomatoes
1 (16 oz.) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce

Instructions

  • Add the olive oil to a large soup pot and place it over medium-high heat for two minutes. Add the onion. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef to the pot. Break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 6-7 minutes, until the beef is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the chili powder, cumin, sugar, tomato paste, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and optional cayenne. Stir until well combined.
  • Add the broth, diced tomatoes (with their juice), drained beans, and tomato sauce. Stir well.
  • Bring the liquid to a low boil. Then, reduce the heat (low to medium-low) to gently simmer the chili, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Let the chili rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Hey, speaking of gas (from the chili)…the prices don’t stink as much as they have in previous months. Costco still has the best price in town.

Toy Drive for Kelowna Santas

We want to give a huge thank you to all of our customers who helped with our first Toy Drive! We didn’t quite meet our $1000 goal to match the donations..but we thought it would be pretty grinchy of us not to. Thanks to you we raised $750 and we matched that donation. We look forward to doing it again next year and helping those who may not have been able to get much for the holiday season.

Thank you again for being such a great customer, we look forward to seeing you again soon.
